Acer R271 Review

Acer R271 Review

When it comes to computer hardware brands, it’s hard to find a company that’s more reputable than Acer. Not only are they known for their fantastic consumer grade laptops but they have also got a bunch of high end gaming products. Which is why their products are usually recommended. Today we are going to review their budget friendly monitor, the Acer R271. Not only is it incredibly well priced but it has also got an ultra slim design and an IPS screen. So let’s see how well it does with games.

Design

The Acer R271 is an extremely well designed monitor. It has incredibly thin bezels surrounding the screen. This allows you to position the two monitors right next to each other and pretty much experience a merged screen. That’s of course if you have enough space. The monitor has an overall dimension of 62.1×45.4×23.4 cm / 24.4×17.9×9.2″ and that does include the stand. The screen size is 27 inches. Which means that using two of these does require a decent size desk. Unfortunately you can’t mount it onto a wall as it’s not compatible with VESA.

Acer R271 Design

What I do like about the design is that you can adjust the tilt of the monitor. That said, it’s only from -5 to 15 degrees. Oh and this monitor also comes with two 2W built in speakers. They are located at the bottom of the monitor. The back side is also where all of the ports are located at. Those include HDMI, DVI, VGA and a standard 3.5 mm Audio connector for headphones.

I do like the overall design of the Acer R271. It’s just that I wish they had added VESA compatibility to it so that you could attach it to a wall. There’s really no reason not to have that.

Performance

Like most new monitors, the Acer R271 has an IPS panel as the screen. It supports 16.7 million colors and it has a brightness of 250 cd/m2. And like most IPS panels, the colors are not only vivid but also clear and intense. Which is fantastic for gaming, watching movies and any other daily tasks. You can also use it for drawing or photo editing. But I wouldn’t recommend this for professional artists as they are usually much more demanding when it comes to color accuracy.

What I am somewhat disappointed with is the resolution. The maximum resolution that this 27 inch monitor supports is Full HD, as in 1920×1080. For me, this is a bit too small for such a size. It brings the pixel density to 81 PPI, which again isn’t the best if you happen to sit close to the monitor. It won’t be a problem as long as you sit further away from the screen. But still I wish they had added support for 1440p.

This particular monitor doesn’t really require any configuring. It has been calibrated in factory and you can use it straight away. I did adjust the brightness but that was it. The monitor I received also didn’t have any dead pixels.

Overall I’d say that the Acer R271 is a great 27 inch monitor for watching movies and casual gaming. The 4 ms response time is more than enough for anyone that doesn’t play games professionally. You can also use this particular monitor with consoles and it works. I used it with my PS4 and didn’t run into any problems.

Settings

I mentioned before that this monitor doesn’t require any configuring. This doesn’t mean that you can’t. Acer has cleverly hidden all of the physical buttons underneath the monitor. You can use these to access the On Screen Display, also known as OSD. It’s really easy to use and you can change all of the basic settings through it. That includes brightness, color temperatures and contrast. You can also access Acer eColor Management, which has a bunch of pre-calibrated settings that you can use. This particular monitor also comes with a low blue light filter. Which is especially good if you spend hours continuously looking at the screen.

Conclusion

I’m happy that the bigger computer brands have also started making products for the budget market as well. The Acer R271 is an absolute steal for the price that it’s sold for. That’s of course if it fits your requirements. Not only does the monitor have a beautiful design but it has also got a fantastic high quality IPS screen. I’d say that this monitor is best for everyday use and casual gaming. The colors are perfect for both watching movies and gaming. I can also recommend this if you are looking for a separate monitor for a console.
