AmazonBasics BSK30 Review

AmazonBasics BSK30 Review

There are plenty of gadgets that you don’t really need to expect much from. Lets take Bluetooth speakers for example. As long as they are portable, have a solid wireless connection and good audio quality, they are probably worth it. Which technically should be most of them. Unfortunately that’s not always the case. Which is why it’s great to take a look at devices from the AmazonBasics series.

For example the AmazonBasics BSK30, which is a popular Bluetooth speaker. It has been gaining a lot of positive reviews about its price and build quality. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise as this brand does belong to Amazon after all. So what I’m really most interested in is how well it performs. Which is why I decided to buy it as well.

What I like about the AmazonBasics series is that they don’t worry too much about the design of their products. I don’t mean it in a bad way. It’s just that they don’t try to make their devices look fancier than they have to be. And I can appreciate that. The AmazonBasics BSK30 is a simple rectangular shaped Bluetooth speaker. It’s really the most basic wireless speaker design. It has an overall dimension of 160×66×38 mm / 6.3×2.6×1.5″ and it weighs only 227 g / 0.5 lbs. And of course its made out of really standard cheapish plastic.

AmazonBasics BSK30 Design

You do get to pick between 3 different colors: black, blue and red. That’s about as interesting as it gets in terms of the design. I personally went with the black color but all of them look pretty nice. That really comes down to personal preference. What doesn’t is the button layout. There are in total 4 physical buttons on the top of the speaker: play, pair, volume up and down. The power on/off switch is at the back of the speaker. Right next to the Micro USB port and 3.5 mm AUX input.

AmazonBasics BSK30 Buttons

That’s about it. Oh yeah Amazon has also added these small fluffy stripes underneath it. They are supposed to add grip to the speaker so that it doesn’t freely move around a desk. I guess they work but I would had preferred it if they had used rubber instead.

Sound Quality & Battery Life

The speaker runs on two 2.5 W drivers. Which is definitely not the most powerful model out of all the portable speakers. That said, the speaker still packs a decent amount of bass. Turning up the volume is loud enough to cover the entire room. The problem is that the sound quality drops significantly when you turn the volume above around 70%. It gets rather harsh and you start to hear cracks. But below 70% it’s absolutely clear.

Should you expect some amazing audio quality from this speaker? Most definitely not, it’s super cheap after all. But you can definitely use it to listen to any type of music. After all most people don’t buy portable speakers for the sound quality. It’s also great for listening to movies and TV series. You can expect around 13 hours of battery life from it so it’s definitely enough to get through a season of Game Of Thrones. It takes around 3.5 hours to fully charge it again.

Oh and there aren’t any LED indicators that would notify you the battery level. Instead it starts beeping when the battery is getting low.

Wireless Connectivity

The AmazonBasics BSK30 uses Bluetooth to pair up with devices. It has a decent range of 10 m / 33 ft. That’s quite a standard wireless range among the cheaper portable speakers. Pairing it up is super easy though. Just turn on the speaker, make sure that your phone has Bluetooth turned on and select the speaker to pair it. You can also use the audio jack input port if you don’t have Bluetooth enabled. You can even switch between those two by pressing the “O” button.

If you have looked at the design section, then you probably noticed a button with a phone sign as well. That can be used to pick up calls as the speaker does have a microphone built-in as well.

Overall the AmazonBasics BSK30 is the best portable speaker in its price category. You just can’t go wrong with it if you want a cheap model. It’s an Amazon brand so you always get the exact same quality and that’s quite important for customers. Plus you don’t need to worry about it getting lost in the mail or dealing with customer service. Reliability is huge and that’s the biggest plus side of the AmazonBasics series.
