Audio Technica ATH-M50x Review

Audio Technica ATH-M50x

Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones first became popular for destroying Beats by Dre Studio’s. With almost half the price and way better sound quality, they became the best band for buck headphones available. Especially gaining the love of devoted music listeners and audiophiles. So since these headphones are so good, I don’t see a reason why they can’t be used at a gym. Obviously they won’t work when running, as they are big over-ears, but while lifting weights… Why not. I have personally been using the Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones for 2 months now at the gym. So here are my thoughts so far.

In The Box

  • Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones
  • 3m / 9.8ft, 1.2m / 3.9ft straight cables
  • 1.2-3m / 3.9-9.8ft coiled cable
  • Soft case/bag

The Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones have a pretty standard and simple design. They actually look really professional and don’t have anything flashy on them. They are also really well built and super strong. The cord is thick so it can last for a long time. Especially good at the gym where the cord can easily get damaged. You can also fold the headphones and place them in your bag, without having to worry about damaging them. You can also switch between 3 different length cables to fit your needs.

Audio Technica ATH-M50x Review

The ATH-M50x are over-ear headphones and so you get some real thick padded earcups. Besides being really comfortable, the earcups also sit quite tight on the ears and passively seal out noise as well. Obviously not as well as earbuds but the difference is still noticeable. Because these headphones are big, they also weigh quite a bit – 283g/10oz. This is another reason why these should only be used while lifting and not running and such. Your neck will just get tired.

Also I want to add that the cable does not have a remote control on it. That is kind of a negative I guess as you need to take out your phone to change songs. I can’t really blame Audio Technica here though as these are studio headphones. So it really comes down to how much you value having a remote control.

Soundwise, Audio Technica ATH-M50x are the best bang for buck headphones available for sure. They are really well balanced, sound super clear and full of detailed bass on every range. You can use these to listen to any music genre. They sound just as great when playing electronic dance music or even classical music. The spectrum is literally that wide and it is amazing. I also want to note that if you are into some deep house, these headphones will also deliver real deep bass, which makes that genre sound especially good.

In my opinion, the Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones are the very best over-ear option for both the gym and outside of it. You can use these to listen to music anywhere, and that’s what makes them so versatile. What impresses me the most, is that the ATH-M50x compete with headphones in the price range of $300-500. And you can get these for $130 off Amazon. So essentially you are getting the same build and audio quality of much more expensive headphones.

If you have the money to invest $130 in headphones, then the Audio Technica ATH-M50x is the best option for both gym and other everyday activities.
