Best Laser Measure Tools For Homeowners & Engineers

Having a good laser measure tool is a must for both homeowners and engineers. Sure you can use an old tape measure but it’s not the best for long distances. Plus it often requires two people. So as the technology has progressed, we now have laser distance measuring tools. The way they work is pretty simple. The tool sends out a laser beam onto an object of which distance you want to measure. It then measures the time it took to reach that object and how long it took to bounce back. This will give you an exact distance between you and the object.

And you don’t really have to worry too much about inaccuracy. The best laser measure tools are incredibly accurate and I have barely noticed a difference between the value it gives and a tape measure.

1. Bosch GLM 10 – $24

Bosch is a German electronics company that is widely known for their high quality home appliances and power tools. They have all the tools any homeowner, builder or engineer could require. The same goes for laser distance measuring devices. Their range of them is quite impressive and there’s definitely something for every budget. For a home user, I recommend getting the Bosch GLM 10. It’s a cheap but high quality laser measure that’s perfect around home.

Bosch GLM 10 Best Laser Measure Budget

The Bosch GLM 10 is one of the most compact laser measures I have used. It has a dimension of 102×36×23 mm / 4×1.4×0.9″ and weighs just 91 g / 0.2 lbs. The entire case is made out of what appears to be quite thick plastic. It feels rugged, there are zero scratches on mine despite using it for a while now. The front of the measure has a small LCD screen and 1 button. The back of it has a compartment for the two AAA batteries.

Technical Specifications

  • Dimensions: 102×36×23 mm / 4×1.4×0.9″
  • Weight: 91 g / 0.2 lbs
  • Range: 10 m / 35 ft
  • Accuracy: +/- 1/8 inch
  • Precision: 1/16 inch (standard), 0.001 meter (metric)
  • Power Source: 2 AAA Batteries
  • Battery Life: Approximately 5 hours of use
  • Warranty: 2 Years

Another thing that I like about it is how easy it is to use it. All you have to do is press the button and it instantly starts displaying the distance on the screen. Keep in mind that the device starts measuring from the back of it and not from the end where the laser comes out. Another push of the button holds the value of the distance. It can display up to two values so you’ll have to write them down after every other measurement. It’s also really accurate, I re-checked with a measurement tape and there was no difference. So overall if you are looking for a cheap option, then the Bosch GLM 10 is the best laser measure to get for your home!

2. Bosch GLM 35 – $69

Another best laser measure for home is the Bosch GLM 35. It’s an improved version of the GLM 10 and definitely better if you are looking for more accurate measurements. For example I recommend getting the GLM 35 if you also like to do a lot of DIY around the house. Such as for building a porch or just renovating.

Bosch GLM 35 Laser Measure

The Bosch GLM 35 is a professional grade device and that can already be seen from the build quality. The materials used are the highest quality so it looks like it can take a beating. It even has an IP54 class which means that it’s both water and dust resistant. The laser has a pocket size dimension of 104×41×23 mm / 4.1×1.6×0.9″ and weighs just 99 g / 0.22 lbs. Compared to the GLM 10, it has much more range (36 m / 120 ft). That’s definitely enough for professionals and especially engineers. There is also a backlit LCD screen which is fantastic for using outside and in darker areas.

Technical Specifications

  • Dimensions: 104×41×23 mm / 4.1×1.6×0.9″

Besides the IP54 class and backlit LCD screen, the Bosch GLM 35 has also got plenty of other features. It has an impressive accuracy of +/- 1/16″ (1.5 mm). I did test it next to a 32 ft / 10 m measurement tape and it displayed the exact same value. As you can tell from the buttons on the laser, there are also modes you can choose from. For example you can select to measure length, area and volume. It also includes indirect measurements! The options, quality and price make it the best laser measure for both homeowners and engineers. It’s a really well priced device in my opinion.

3. DEWALT DW03050 – $99

DEWALT is an American power tool company for professionals. That means that their product are tough, have high quality and most importantly all the features an industrial user would require. Their laser distance measurer DW03050 is exactly that. The device has plenty of features and even a 3 year limited warranty. It’s perfect for engineers and definitely the best laser measure for under $100.

DEWALT DW03050

The DEWALT DW03050 has a tough and durable case. It has a IP65 class (water/debris resistance) and it’s even been  6 ft / 2 m drop tested. So you definitely don’t have to worry about the durability. DEWALT even provides a 90 day money back guarantee, 1 year free service and 3 years of limited warranty! The overall design/look is pretty standard for a laser measure. It has a dimension of 120×55×34 mm / 4.7×2.2×1.3″ and weighs 127 g / 0.28 lbs. The front has also got a 2 line backlit display.

Technical Specifications

  • Dimensions: 120×55×34 mm / 4.7×2.2×1.3″

The laser has a long range of 50 m / 165 ft. That should definitely be enough for most people. Besides that, the laser is also just as accurate as using a measuring tape. Using the laser is also as simple as pressing the DIST button to capture the distance. Pay in mind that the laser starts measuring from the end of the device. So the length of the laser measure is always included. The device gets a bit more complicated if you plan on using the modes that come with it. For example you can use it to calculate an area, volume and even indirect measurements. The DEWALT does come with a user manual that explains on how to get the most out of the device.

4. Bosch GLM 80 – $160

Having the best laser measure is extremely important for professionals. Especially engineers and those working on constructions. The Bosch GLM 80 is perfect for construction sites. It has a high range of 80 m / 265 ft and plenty of features/modes to make it useful. It’s definitely a high tech model from Bosch and while the price seems high, you really get the best quality and features for it.

Bosch GLM 80

Since the Bosch GLM 80 is a high tech professional grade laser measure, it’s also a bit more complicated than the cheaper models. As you can tell from just looking at the laser, the front is full of buttons. Despite that, the laser measure is still far from fragile. It’s been made out of high quality plastic and the whole thing just feels durable. It also has a dimension of 111×51×30 mm / 4.4×2.0×1.2″ and weighs 136 g / 0.3 lbs. The Bosch GLM 80 is insanely accurate considering that it has a range of 80 m / 265 ft. The laser distance measurer can also be used outside during daylight but you’ll have to use special red glasses to see the laser. Unfortunately they don’t come with the laser so you’ll have to buy those separate if you want to use the laser properly outside. The laser also has tons of functions to measure with. You can even measure at a certain angle and it will tell you which one it is. The device has a built in 360° incline sensor for that. Besides that, I also like what they have done with the display. The display rotates with the laser so if you place it horizontally, then the display will rotate accordingly as well. So you can always read the data without having to turn your head.

So out of all the other Bosch laser devices, it’s the biggest and weighs the most. Which does make sense as it also uses 4 AAA batteries. And of course reading the manual, which is pretty well written in my opinion. Everything is straight forward and doesn’t take long to browse through. The long range and accuracy definitely makes it the best laser measure for constructions. Also using red glasses is a must during daylight. That’s the only way to see the laser at long distances.
