Bosch GLM 80 Review

When it comes down to power tools, there aren’t many companies that are as known as Bosch. But besides the typical power tools, they also have a huge selection of different laser distance measure tools! And today I’m going to review their mid-range model, the Bosch GLM 80. It’s designed for professionals but it can also be used by homeowners that often remodel or participate in DIY projects. It also comes with a ton of different features that are especially recommended for engineers.

The Bosch GLM 80 has a pretty typical rectangular laser distance measure design. It’s made out of high quality plastic that’s been covered with black rubber on the edges. Which does add a decent level of extra durability to it’s body. It also has a water resistance ratio of IP54. As in the GLM 80 is both splash water and dust resistant. The laser measure has a of dimension 111×51×30 mm / 4.4×2.0×1.2″ and weighs 136 g / 0.3 lbs. The size fits nicely into your hand and it’s really easy to use.

The front side of the Bosch GLM 80 has a very nice LCD screen and 10 buttons. The LCD screen has a backlight so you can use it also in places that don’t have much light. The display even tilts like on smartphones. So when you need to flip it horizontally, the display will flip as well. Which isn’t a must but still a really nice feature to have in my opinion. The buttons feel really nice as well. You’ll notice it when you actually push them.

Another thing that I really like about the GLM 80 is that it comes with a built-in battery. There is a MicroUSB port on the back side of the distance measure that is used for charging. It also comes with a charging cable attached to a power plug.

The maximum range of the Bosch GLM 80 is 80 m / 265 ft with an accuracy of +/- 1/16 inch (1.5 mm). Which is really good and the range should be enough for most professionals. But that’s not really where the laser measure shines. What makes it so good are all the functions that come with it.

First of all it has a built-in memory that stores up to 20 of your last measurements. Then it has the typical Area and Volume calculation, but it can also solve indirect lengths and also calculate angles. It has a built-in 360 degree sensor that works both horizontally and vertically. Here is the full list of functions:

  • Distances
  • Area and Volume
  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Pythagoras
  • Minimum and Maximum
  • Timer
  • Angle

Like I mentioned before, the distance measure has a built-in battery. And it has a pretty long battery life as well. According to Bosh, the battery should last up to 25000 measurements.

The Bosch GLM 80 is one of the best reasonably priced laser distance measure tools for professionals. There are plenty of other available options from companies like Leica, that have tons of even crazier features. But those also cost way more. So in terms of price-performance ratio, the GLM 80 is the most reasonable option in my opinion.
