Linksys is a company that has been making wireless routers for over a decade now. They are known for their fantastic quality and they make products for both home users and small businesses. They have also been introducing wireless routers with smart features lately. These are the type of devices that are designed for smart homes as they can handle more devices. Design

The Linksys EA7300 looks like most modern wireless routers. It’s made out of this smooth black plastic that’s pretty high quality. It also has a dimension of 25.7×18.4×5.6 cm / 10.1×7.2×2.2″, which is an okay size. This doesn’t include the 3 long antennas so they definitely add some height. Overall I’d say that the smart wireless router looks very sleek. I keep it on the desk next to my monitor so it blends into the environment. I don’t have any problems with keeping it visible in the open as I really like the way it looks.

The back of the wireless router has all the ports. There’s a single Internet port where you plug in the cable that comes from your modem. There are also 4 extra Ethernet ports if you want to connect other devices to it via cable. The wireless router it self is powered with a power cable / adapter that does require a wall outlet. In addition, this wireless router also includes a USB 3.0 port. You can use it to connect it to an external hard drive. Which you can then use to transfer files to other devices via the wireless network.

Setting It Up

Luckily Linksys has done a great job at making their wireless routers easy to use and configure. This is also the case with the Linksys EA7300. In order to get it running, you first need to turn on the router. There is a small switch on the back of it, right next to the power input. Once you have done that, plug in the Internet cable from your modem and wait for it to boot up.

Now it depends whether you are using a wireless device or a PC without a wireless adapter. If you are using a laptop for example, then you need to connect to the router (details are written underneath the actual router) and open up “http://linksyssmartwifi.com” in the browser. If it doesn’t work, then you can also access it by typing either 192.168.1.1 or “myrouter.local”. You also need to do this with a PC but the only difference is that you need to connect it to the wireless router with an Ethernet cable. Accessing the page in the browser will open up a setup that automatically configures the router and sets it up for you.

Performance

The Linksys EA7300 is a smart wireless router, which means that it has plenty of features. But first let’s take a look at it’s main function – creating a wireless network. Especially since this is the bread and butter of Linksys. The maximum internet speed that it can produce also depends on the devices you are connecting it to. For example if your laptop has the newest 802.11 AC wireless card, then the maximum combined internet speed you can get is 1.7 Gbps. Plus it can handle up to 10 plus devices. It’s also fast enough to handle streaming 4K videos.

This wireless router is also backwards compatible, which means that you can also connect to it with older devices as well that only support 802.11 a, b, g or n types. You also get all the exact same features. Just that the speed will be lowered based on it. Which most probably won’t be a problem for most people as even the older standards can handle most peoples internet speeds.

Overall the wireless router performs extremely well. The 3 external antennas are enough to cover a small house. The WiFi signal is also strong even if you move further away from the router. I had no difference in the transfer speed when I was 9 meters / 30 ft away and there was a full concrete wall in between. Plus the signal is stable, which is the most important part in my opinion.

MU-MIMO

MU-MIMO is a type of technology that can handle a high amount of people simultaneously connecting to the wireless network. It actually stands for Multiple User, Multiple Input and Multiple Output. What it does is that it creates multiple separate wireless networks to handle all the incoming connections. However they aren’t visible. As in you don’t actually connect to a different WiFi network. The system automatically places you into the right network inside the router.

This is great if you have a lot of different wireless devices. Such as smart home devices for example. Distributing them puts less strain on each network so they are easier to handle. Which is a pretty important feature of the Linksys AC1750.

Phone App

Another reason why the Linksys AC1750 (EA7300) is called smart is because you can also access it with your phone. As in there’s a Linksys Smart WiFi app that’s available on both iOS and Android devices. You can use the app to access all the wireless router settings and configure them. You can also set some parental controls, such as block certain websites. It’s definitely pretty convenient and easy to use.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the Linksys EA7300 is one of the best valued wireless routers that you can currently buy. It’s been designed for the average consumer and it has plenty of higher end features, such as MU-MIMO. Not to mention how fast it actually is. I have read plenty of reviews where changing their wireless router clearly improved their internet speed. I’m also a huge fan of being able to access the router straight from the app on my phone. Plus you can also restrict access to certain pages on the internet, which can be pretty good for families.
