Xiaomi Amazfit Bip Review
Xiaomi is one of the most known brands when it comes to gadgets. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they also have fitness trackers! Ever since they released the Mi Band 2, they have been one of the leading fitness tracker brands in the world.
To continue their success, Xiaomi has now released their latest activity monitor: the Amazfit Bip! Well to be correct, it’s actually manufactured by Huami, a sub brand of Xiaomi. But it’s like that with most of their products. And yes, the Amazfit Bip is also very well priced considering it costs under $100! According to Xiaomi, the new activity tracker has more features than any other competitor in the same price range. Which makes it a fantastic product. So let’s see if it lives up to the hype.

The Amazfit Bip doesn’t look like a typical activity monitor. Instead, it is more of a smaller smartwatch. I would even say that based on the design, it’s pretty close to an Apple watch. It has a 1.28″ LCD touchscreen that has a resolution of 176×176 pixels. The screen is also covered by the Gorilla Glass 3, which has nice and round edges. And that’s what really adds higher quality to the Amazfit Bip in my opinion. The body is made out of higher quality plastic and it even has an IP68 waterproof rating!
You also get to choose between 4 different colors: Onyx Black, Cinnabar Red, White Cloud and Kokoda Green. They come with a flexible plastic strap. You can also later on change the strap if you wish to. Huami has kept the standard 20 mm width watch strap connector, so switching them isn’t a problem. There are so many different ones available on Aliexpress for example so you can really make it match your style.
The Amazfit Bip is a hybrid between an activity tracker and a smartwatch. You can tell that from the simple design. There is just one button on the device and it’s positioned on the side. That button is there in case you need quickly activate the screen. The backside of the tracker has an optical heart rate sensor and connector pins for charging. Huami has also included a small charging dock that’s used for charging the Amazfit Bip. You simply place the watch onto the dock and it will start charging through the pins.
Despite the small size, the Xiaomi Amazfit Bip still has all the functions you’d expect from an activity tracker. It has built in sensors for counting your steps, measure your heart rate and even monitor your sleep. Plus a lot more of course. It has even got GPS and GLONASS receivers now, which provides even more precise information now. The Amazfit Bip can really track absolutely everything.
All of the data is also shown on the LCD screen. Which does make this more of a smart watch as well but with activity tracker features. It’s so easy to use the Amazfit Bip thanks to the touchscreen. Just swipe across the screen to move through the menus. Everything looks surprisingly large and the colors are so nice. You also get to choose between 10 different digital screen styles.
When you connect it to your phone via Bluetooth, then you can also view incoming messages and notifications on the screen. It also vibrates when you get an incoming call and displays the caller ID. You can also view all of the tracked data on your phone as well. You do need do download the Mi Fit App for that. It’s available on both iOS and Android devices. What I really like about the App is that you can also view your walking paths on a map.
Huami has also added a timer/stopper to the watch as well. Which is an extremely good addition in the gym in my opinion. So the Amazfit Bip isn’t useful for just outside activities. You can fully take advantage of all the features while working out indoors as well.
The most impressive part about the Xiaomi Amazfit Bip is the battery life. Somehow the engineers at Huami have managed to get 45 days out of a 190mAh battery! This is of course when you have all the settings as low as possible. And with the GPS turned off. With continuous GPS usage, the battery should last up to 22 hours. And if you are using it just to monitor your sleep and count your steps, then the battery life can even last up to 4 months. Fully charging the battery takes 2.5 hours.
As I mentioned above, the Amazfit Bip uses Bluetooth to pair with your smartphone. The Mi Fit app is available on both iOS and Android devices. And the best part is that the App actually gets updates pretty often. It’s used by all the Mi Band activity trackers, so you don’t have to worry about it becoming useless.
The Mi Fit app gives you a better overview of all your activities. You can view how the physical activity has spread throughout the day, how many calories you have burnt and how much you have walked. You can also view your journeys on a map. Plus all the other data you can view. There’s too much of those to list here but you can practically see everything. You can also upload your activity onto social media as well through the app. An interesting feature that I found is that the Amazfit Bip can also calculate how much car fuel you have saved while walking.
The Xiaomi Amazfit Bip is an extremely well priced activity monitor / smartwatch! I can easily recommend it for everyone who is looking to buy their very first activity tracker. The inexpensive price tag makes it really affordable. Which doesn’t mean that it’s not good for others. Even if you have owned activity trackers before, the Amazfit Bip can still be an excellent choice. It does everything that Xiaomi has promised and it’s surprisingly comfortable to wear as well. I’m actually really happy with it.
